Shame on me for skipping out on the DIY fun. In my defense, I’ve been stacking up ideas but they’ve simply been tucked away, warm and comfy in the right hemisphere of my brain.
Naturally, I wanted to start back up with the idea that has been most nagging. I do love a woman in a peplum, and more so their ability to flatter the waist without revealing too much. I’ve watched them grace the hips of many screen gems on Turner Classic Movies. Plus the varieties are as vast as the women who wear them.
This tutorial shouldn’t take you long. It is pretty simple if you already have a top (or tee) you want to add some love to. (This tutorial can get you started) Hand-stitching is also an option if you have the endurance of a Titan. I, on the other hand, do not and pulled out the sewing machine.
You will need:
1. Top + enough fabric to go around you waist 2-3 times. PLEASE NOTE, I used pleating to achieve this look, you can also used wider pleats OR gathers.
2. Sewing Machine OR Needle and Thread
3. Elastic (enough to go around your waist WITHOUT being stretched.)
4. Pins
Step 1: This was a pant suit my grandma was in the process of making. The pant legs became the peplum.
Step 2: Take your elastic, pleat and pin the fabric along its length.
Step 3: Here are my pleats. You can widen yours or again do a gather instead.
Step 4: Once you are done, top-stitch the pleats in place with your sewing machine.
Step 5: Sew the peplum to the base/hem of your top, leaving the ends of the elastic pieces in the back. You are going to cut .5 inch from each side of the tails of the elastic. Stitch the tails together and your done!
Thanks you for sharing this. I attempted to make a peplum jacket a couple of months ago. Let’s just say it looks like a maternity jacket lol. But this tutorial helped a lot. I can’t wait to try this out.
I would appreciate if you’d consider selling this because I NEED it.
I’m getting there Stef. Selling custom clothing is where I want to go.

Thank you Beth! That is a most definitely a compliment coming from you. Your dresses are beautiful.
I just got a sewing machine for Christmas and am learning how to sew. This top is just adorable! I’ve been wanting a peplum top… so why not make one??!! I may be back with questions when I get started. I’m just a beginner at sewing. :)
Go Girl! Map everything out before hand and you’ll be good to go. Of course I’m here if you need me.
